COMMUNITY STORIES: JOSH MEITZ

My name is Josh Meitz. I am from St. Paul, a place not many people realize is the twin city to Minneapolis, just ten minutes down the interstate and five hours from Milwaukee. I began making images during the pandemic in 2020, right as I began my Freshman year, so coincidentally I have not nearly taken as many photos in my hometown as compared to Milwaukee. When I take landscapes I tend to ride my bike around because it helps me go places that people in cars cannot see. In other words, biking facilitates finding composition in the most unique spots in the city.

I decided to attend Marquette University due to a gut feeling. I knew I wanted a school of medium size in a city, but Marquette spoke to me for no apparent reason. I could not be more grateful for choosing Marquette because of the opportunities I have been graciously given to accelerate my photography career. For example, working for Summerfest, the world’s largest music festival, as well as Major League Baseball, and the Marquette athletic department.

The main source of inspiration for me to pursue a business venture was Student-Made. I realized a Limited Liability Company would not only help me organize my taxes, but create a platform for me to share my work with the Marquette community.

I hope being a business owner can help me organize my LLC and maintain a professional outlook to the real world. Student-Made has given me a platform to bounce around ideas and practice my business skills.

As I graduate Marquette this December, I look to continue my passion for sports photography. I have always found it easy to learn new skills when I push my comfort zone and try different genres. For example, switching from landscape to sports turned my hobby not only into multiple jobs, but made me the photographer I am today.

For the future of my business, I do not expect to be selling prints as my main source of revenue. I want to obtain a full-time job somewhere in the sports industry, and freelance for surrounding organizations in the city I live in. Right now, I do not know where I want to live or where I will end up, I am just riding the wave.
