COMMUNITY STORIES: DEIRDRE ROOS

The community connections run deep. Where you go to high school means everything, and everybody knows everybody.

This has impacted me significantly, especially coming to Cincinnati, which is another city where most people know everybody. Learning how to make connections and build on those connections with people has been crucial.

I love sports, so having a fantastic basketball team and the Big East Conference was a very big deciding factor. I also love that we have a great business school with fantastic opportunities to take advantage of as soon as your freshman year.

It is small enough to explore, but there are lots of opportunities and fantastic businesses in the area.

Being a Jesuit university also makes a huge difference in the way the community, professors, and other students are all centered around faith and are truly looking to help each other.

I have always found the political and economic state of the world fascinating, and love to delve into the connections between these two things. I love philosophical discussions about how something like gas prices increasing can lead to a change in different parts of the world.

Student-Made has fallen perfectly into that area of my major, and I am so excited to continue being a manager.

I fell in love with my marketing class from the first day and think that it’s so helpful as an entrepreneur to know why people make decisions the way they do.

Joining a group on campus directly related to things I am so interested in was a great opportunity. This has been such a meaningful experience because I love getting to learn from and work beside new people, and my co-managers have been fantastic.

Our partnership with Findlay market is one of them, which is a huge outdoor market place in downtown Cincinnati. We were able to have one event there this semester, but are so excited to host several more and be there on a monthly basis as well as at their holiday markets.

These experiences during college are so beneficial for both creators and managers, and I am able to see tangibly how positive the experience is.

I want everyone to put in their maximum effort so they see the best results for their sales. I had a business on my own in high school and middle school so I have seen how much goes into a small business.

I am so excited to see how this helps me in life. Already, I have learned how to take my type A discipline and keep the balls in the air for events while simultaneously giving myself grace when things don’t go according to plan. Even just those simple lessons will take me far.

If I am starting something later in  life, I would love to go back to my Student-Made community for advice.

I hope to give some more structure to this community moving forward. We are such a new branch and are finding our place on campus and where we fit within the Center for Innovation. I would love to have Student-Made in a place where the next manager can come in and see the formula and execute the planning of events.
